Yesterday I downloaded Moyea video converter to convert swf (flash) files to mp4 for my iPod. The converter works fine and the videos come out in excellent quality when I try playing them on my iTunes, but when I put them on my iPod it only played audio and showed a black screen.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Just delete the guy and/or posting.

He's tied to pirated rings and the software he advertises for is well known in the circles for stealing copyrighted materials.

He can't pirate MyDMX with any success unless he is able to steal a dongle and reverse engineer it. Wouldn't put it past him.

I dislike the heavy amount of compression used, and then converting from one format to another format is just a way to almost guarantee problems.

Then again, I deal with high end video, so, I'm somewhat negative on these cruddy low-end things.

What I would suggest is even though it sound stupid, convert the video to a more common platform, such as DV-quality AVI. This works great on Mac and PC. If this format is working pretty good, I'd say at that point, it's probably going to be pretty safe to then convert it to the desired end-format.

For example, and excuse me for skipping a step. When I capture film or am doing other video recording, I capture to DV-format AVI. But, in the end, one of two things are going to happen: either it's going to DVD(which is MPG2, which is based on 3DO) or it's going to be a .WMV file. I let the DVD transcoding software handle the MPG2 compression for DVD, and I let Sony Vegas or windows Movie maker handle the .WMV conversions from the .AVI exports or source files.

One other thing to consider:
The iPod is a dumb device. I don't mean it's stupid, it's dumb in the fact the software and codecs are tightly controlled. This is typical of Apple, but it is also part of the reason why so many Apple products work so well, this almost fanatical want for control over the hardware and software. Yes, it is a restriction, but it's also a strength.

Your iTunes sits on your Mac or PC, which can handle many more formats than the iPod can because of the "softer" environment: Access to additional codecs and more software resources. These are things th iPod won't have access to.

My thoughts are that you might have not used the right setting on the software responsible for converting your SWF video to MP4.

Don't assume iTunes=guaranteed iPod compatibility. There are some tricks you can use, but you'll need to look them up for yourself. I don't own an MP3 player, don't own an iPod and I don't like the fact that Apple seems to thing everyone needs iTunes. I won't get the iPhone because I refuse to deal with Apple and iTunes. If I want something in my phone, I should be able to do that without involving Apple. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple computers. I own plenty, I'm using my hot new 17" MacBook Pro with BootCamp right now. So, I'm not an Apple hater.

I think your conversion didn't go as you thought it would. Convert to a more standard platform before going to your desired format, and I think that should do it. I know its an extra step, but it usualy will guarantee compatibility.

Another example: I have THOUSANDS of Mac System 7 sounds, which were previously mostly SoundEdit files. I had to convert those to Sound Designer II files to convert those to .wav files, AIFF and .MP3 files. I just needed to get to that common platform before i could easily do the last three conversions. It works for me.
