I have just looked through the forum and am wondering when is too much not too much. Seeing the Dj setup pics I wonder if it's worth going throught the hastle with all your setups? I keep it simple and go for the gig and try not to over power my guests. Just wondering if anyone feels the same way? Besides why have all that gear and not want to show it off? It is completely covered from the sight of your guests. I have mine exposed where everyone can enjoy my talent as well as my setup. Feel free to comment. We are all in this together for a better Party to come no offense to anyone.

It's worth it when you have 600 kids screaming and bumping in a large school guy. Also please don't use "gear" as the title of all of your threads."

DJ mobile rigs are like condoms:
I'd rather have it and not need it, than not have it and need it. Big Grin

My rig is definitely worth the "hassle" of setting it up. Actually, over time, I've found ways to streamline and make setup & tear down faster. Like the "cover" you mentioned (the facade or fake wall). It allows me to just set everything up quick, then BAM! cover it up, no one sees. And it looks clean and neat from the outside. Most people don't care about the equipment you have (unless they're other DJs). They just want to dance! I like my rig to look professional: clean, no wires hanging out, safe from harm (guests).

Well I like to keep things simple and only bring what I need and as far as cables go I keep mine away from everyone. I was just referring to all the equipment I saw maybe I just don't understand what I am seeing. It looked as though you were running some kind of big show with lighting controls and stuff. Not knocking your gear at all just wondering what exactly are you doing with all that gear during your show. Personally I keep my main gear in one box then run my cables and then run my lighting and I don't have as much gear as the person has in that photo. Also for example Dj Skilz in his video you see what he needs right in front of him turntables and mixer. done deal that easy. As far as my guest's they always come over to see what I have. Maybe that's just the way we are in New York and now here in Las Vegas but everyone always wants to see what I have and they compliment me for how condensed my setup is.(again no offense to anyone just constructive criticism.) Smiler

No offense taken, just wondering what kind of parties do you do DJJose?
I'm a mobile DJ myself, so I have to bring equipment to the venue (catering hall, school, restaurant, bar, etc). Most of my events are Sweet 16s, High School & Jr. High Dances, Surprise Birthday parties, Block parties, and the occasional wedding.
And what pictures are you looking at, could you be more specific? I never really thought my setup was too big. It could be smaller, if I went with a rack-mount CD player. But, I prefer stand alone CD players (like PS2s), so it makes my rig a little bigger.
As far as the lighting truss & controller stuff... Well, like Stevie said, when you're doing a show for 600 teenagers in a school gym, they expect more than just two turntables and a microphone. Wink

GAHH!! Geeze, thanks Bill, that's stuck in my head....

Jose, just curious but what's your setup like? I'm an iBook DJ, so there's a very sweet portability right there. Other than that, I have what i feel are the bare essentials, like a mic, cable, lighting controller, truss, and the lights, oh the sweet lights.

In truth, the size of you setup depends on what you're doing with it. For most high school dances, that's all i use, plus speakers (the majority of the time, i get to use a borrowed system, one that far outpowers my speakers).

For a larger dance, like a winter Ball, i borrowed the Protium Fuel Cell band's PA system, and sweet 2000-watt deal with subs and high cabs, and with that and two light trees of light (along with several stands) filled that place up with headroom to spare.

Sure, it was a pain to move, but the end result was one of the greatest gigs i have ever had. The energy that setup helped me produce was just unreal. I'm not saying that the equipment makes the performance, but it sure helped out... a lot.

In the end, that hassel can be very well worth it.

well, I personally think it's not possible to have too much gear. I for one am primarily involved in lighting setups so my view is most likely slanted from the majority of people in this forum. However, when a customer hires a dj I feel they are not just hiring them to play music, they're hiring you as an entertainment service. In order to entertain the customer and their guests to the highest level you usually need certain equipment to achieve that and lighting is a great way to do that. I don't know if your refering to my lighting setup that I had posted a video of on here, but yes in my video there is a clip of my lighting setup being run by a dmx board which I custom programmed all sorts of shows into. The majority of people could care less what kind of equipment you have all they are concerned about is the end result and how things appear to them. There not interested in "oh that light has 3 more gobos and a 4 facet prism and can do full cmy mixing" . I for one strongly feel that the more you offer a customer the happier they will be. Granted sometimes certain things dont fit certain venues, however, for many events my rule of thumb seems to have been quite effective. In terms of lighting I say the more you got and the more versatile the fixture the better. Anyway just my 4,000,000 watts

Oh and I agree with Bill, I use (2) ps2's in my audio setup and I prefer them over a dual deck anyday, been there done that would never go back to a dual deck after experiencing the ps2's.

Did this simple but sweet guy ever go to a "Floyd" concert Eeker
Hey, I love Pink but that light show was Awesome!
In regards to a simple set up I have that and put everything into getting the crowd up and dancing. But if I were in the crowd I would love a lot dimming and a lot more of a light show.
You know if you think over kill is the question
and your worried that the US mobile Dj has to much. Just look ant The Technician set-up from Denmark, that thread on the mobile discos reminded me of "Floyd", and that guy plays only
big gigs to the tune of $2,500 a pop. and by the way I would kill for that set-up?
Big Grin
Now to my next point. Does anyone have any info on a good small lighting set up I don't know if controllers are the way or sound activated light are good? A good pro and con it would be grand. Thanks the Bigguy. Cool

Well Guys I am pleased for the responses. I keep my setup simple concealed in a rack box Mixer ******,CD Player Velocity,EQ Beringer,Amp *** 2450,Speakers *** JRX125 2000 Watts Dual 15' Speakes,Plus *** 18' subs when needed. *** 12' For outdoor and convention events. Normally Doubled for the bigger events. But my point was the first few pics. I don't have that much stuff all on the table as shown. And I run quality sound. My CD's take up most of the table not my equipment. It all goes inside the Black box for the hit and run sometimes double gigs I do. Again no offense I just don't see the point in haveing that nuch stuff out. Maybe I just don't know what it's all for.

Not bragging I was asked what type of gear I use and what types of party's I do. Sorry if I offended you I was just trying a new topic of convo getting ideas and sharing idea's I didn't mean to offend anyone by responding to questions asked to me by fellow Brothers in the music industry. Sometimes a little constructive criticism goes a long way and besides if reading new ideas from other Dj's is wrong then I want to be the most wrong person to exist because listening is fundamental and learning comes with experience. He who Has not listened has not heard and if hearing is all that can be done then let the music play on all night long.

Fellow Mobile DJ's....say it with me: "Too much is never enough!!"

When will I stop buying new lights and equipment? Ummm, NEVER!! Always something new on the market but you don't want to push your always faithful older equipment to the side.
