alrightt heyy every1.... I got a question thats been bugging me...
alright say Im djing a highschool dance... or even a public school dance... what kind of music do you play other than hip hop and dance/techno?? like that is what people dance too... then I get these complainers who come up and get mad because the whole dance is hip hop and they wanna hear some punk music and rock and roll and ozzy and all that ****... what do you do? because when you play that stuff you get booed like crazy and how do you dance to that stuff?? Like i wanna look good when i dj so I like the crowds that like all hip hop and dance... any suggestions on what songs to play that are not the top 40 stuff?? for A TEEN /HIGSCHOOL dance... and also what do you do about the rock and roll requests?? do you play them?? thanks... all adivce welcomed dj corbett |

Some times I scratch or drop in famous guitar licks like AC/DC Back In Black, or try this. Do a mashup, of Queen- We Will Rock You, with J-Kwon Tipsy. It drives people insane.

From personal experience, I try not to play any heavy stuff at school dances. Usually leads to 'mosh pits' and hurt students, not good. If I play it, it's usually at the end, and then it's mainstream rock stuff (Good Charlotte, Greenday, Blink, Sum 41, etc.).
No, I won't play Slipknot, System of a Down, CKY, Insane Clown Posse, etc... If it's only a handful of kids that ask for rock, don't sweat it. You can always cop out by saying, "Administration won't let me play that." "Sorry, I only carry dance music." or the ever popular "Nope, don't have it." You can soften it up a little by saying something like, "Yeah, that is a cool song, but..." |

Your right Corbett,
I never said I invented it. Actually I heard another one of our jocks doing it well before I saw the 2N video in AC. You just do it a little like 2N did. Drop the "boom boom chh" in every now and again. Also drop the hook "We Will, We Will Rock you", in between the "Everybody in da Club gettin Tipsy" lines.......like......... "Everybody in da Club gettin Tipsy"<crossfade> "We Will, We Will"<crossfade> "Everybody in da Club gettin Tipsy"<crossfade> "We Will, We Will"<crossfade> "Everybody in da Club gettin Tipsy"<crossfade> "We Will, We Will"<crossfade> "Everybody in da Club gettin Tipsy"<crossfade> "We Will, We Will Rock you"<crossfade> |

Yeah wise words from Billabong. With school dances it's always hard to please everybody because there are always those pockets/groups of "alternative music geeks" who think eveyone else is into their music. Luckily for us they're in a minority. Always keep the majority happy, i.e. POPULAR CHART MUSIC.
If you want to play something different, I like to throw in something retro like The Grease Megamix, Mickey - Toni Basil, The BusStop, Nutbush you know those novelty party songs - kids love'em. Good luck. ROQ out. |

You will get the occaisonal punk requesting such hardcore stuff, yet I usually don't play all that much of it, HS dances arent really the place for it, as the whole point is people want to dance.
Stevie, I've got a lil diffrent version that also rocks the house. Ok Go's "Get over it" has the exact same kick--clap---kickclap as Tipsy, and at the same BPM! |

Thanks alot guys for the advice.. so basically what most of you are saying is to stay away from the punk music at a teen dance even if they come up and say stuff like, "your a **** dj cuz all your playing is rap and hip hop"
well I just dont understand what else I could play because if I play punk stuff it will clear my dance floor and all the punks will still just stand there even if there music is on..they dont do anything they just stand there..??? |
