I've got a gig comeing up at a local Middle School. They want about 90% Reggae and the dance is about 2.5 hours.

I'm not very to reggae at all. Other than my Bob Marley Best Of, and Sean Paul cd's I don't have anything! Sooooo....

What are some great albums/comps for reggae. They want old school 70's type stuff.

I still worry that no one is going to dance to this stuff but I have to give the people what they want.

Thanks,

-chris parsons

I carry 2 reggae compilations in my road library. Each one has 18 songs for a total of 36.These would fill approximately 2.5 hours. One is "Pure Reggae" (Polygram TV 314 565 122-2) and the other one is "Reggae Party" (Polygram TV 314 565 654-2 . These CD's contain what I would describe as Classic Reggae Standards.

Some excellent suggestions all around!

At a Middle School, mention Bob Marley, they'll probably stare at you blankly then say "No, play some reggae!"
They're probably looking for more dancehall type stuff - Buju Banton, Cutty Ranks, "Rich Girl", maybe even Shaggy, etc. Heck, just play the whole Sean Paul CD, they'll be happy. Big Grin (just kidding!!)

I get asked for reggae every now and then but whenever I end up playing it, it kills the dance floor. I try to stay away from it as much as possible with the exception of Sean Paul, he seems to be well liked.
When you say that they asked for 90% Reggae I have to ask, "WHO IS THEY" was it just one person telling you this? One person can't speak for the whole group. I get that all the time. No Rap, well hey whenever ya throws on some Eminem they seem to like that, is that not rap? Don't base your play list on just one persons suggestions. I'd pick up some Reggae but don't count on playing all that much. Just my 2 cents.

"They" is the commitee that puts the dances on. It was advertized as a "Reggae Dance" so that was my only option. I told them that wouldn't be a good idea but they insisted that it would be great...

well guess what???!?

I got a call the day before the gig and was told that the dance was cancled since hardly anyone bought tickets. I didn't say "I told you so" but I did remind them of the contract they signed. You know, the one that says "If the event is cancled within 15 days of it's date, the payment is still due in full"

They wern't upset at all (luckly) and to keep our relationship good I offered to do their next dance with a large discount. This is my first year doing schools so I want to make people happy.
