samuel l sessions - "salsa lesson" , I like to start with this one because it starts so blatently , BAM! all the other DJs play some clever song to start there sets like that radiohead song, but I get straight to buisness.

I don't think I ever really plan, it kind of depends on the type of party, I may start with a slow dance, I may start with some funk, I may start with some hip-pop(ghetto r&b)!

it depends what kind of party , and what kind of music is gonna be played , if your playing trance , you should play the most uplifting and dancable tune you have , and also something that hasn't already been played.

you know , that song on kid A with the electro beat. people like to start techno sets with it because its at just the right tempo for a techno set. I've heard it a million times either the first or last song in the set.

oxygen you don't necessarily want to start with the most dancable song you have, you may blow it too fast (ala american pie Wink ) but you definitely want to play something that the crowd would recognize, it's not the best idea to break a new record in as your opening track, unless you know it'll work!

I usually play something like "Izzo" by the rapper Jay-Z...it's a song that not only gets people out on the floor but, also has a message in it as Jay-Z tell's the crowd in the song "I wanna thank yall for coming out tonight, you coulda been anywhere in tha world, but ur here wit me, I aprreciate that..." It also, could be a good closing song. Just not both at the same night

well, just choose a song with a really good intro, for instance, for a trance mix, to start of with, I might choose the sasha remix of Out of Control by Chemical Brothers. It has 2 minutes of intro Big Grin

But it doesn't what style of music you use, just make sure the intro is great.

i like to be creativew...most of the [parties i do follow after the dinner or what ever...so i like to get there attention...i have this really cool scene set up just for the intro. i use the opening to jump by van halen. 1984.. the intels all sweep to the strange sounds, and colors change to the other noises going on...real attention getter. also at country dances i like to start out with all black and play thunder and lightening crashes with the strobe hitting occasionally to look like lightening while the fog fills the room, then when i get it just right i fade into the thunder rolls by garth brooks...man that really drives them wild...try some looping of a songs cool intro or something...i feel that if you put alot into the opening, (more at parties than a club scene) people will pay attention and they will be more into what your doing, then when folowed up with some good lighting, good music, and really reading the crowd, you can totally grasp them and make them your slaves! Big Grin
