Just had a request for some techno to be played for a dance coming up in december. Thing is, I don't really know anything at all about techno, so what's new, what's good?

This is a school i have played before and they are not really hip with techno, so something that would be "easy to dance to" would be nice. I guess it would be called some softcore techno. Anyway i am playing for newbie's and i am a newbie to all this so help a guy out.

This looks like a job for.... RHUE! Big Grin

Here are some 'classics' that should work:
(I know they are all not Techno in the strictest sense of the genre, but it should work)

Da Rude - "Sandstorm" (overplayed, but eveyone seems to still like it)
Kernkraft 4000 -"Zombie Nation"
DJ Sammy - "Heaven"
Ian Van Dahl - "Castles in the Sky"
Prototype 909 - "THIS, is techno" (just to see if anyone is paying attention. Smiler )

Also, you may want to check out Louie Devito's Dance Factory Level 2, The Riddler's NYC Dance Mix 2 or 3, Best of Club Hits Vol. 1. These are contiously mixed, though, so you will have to fade out/beatmix/get creative, to move between songs. Or, you can just set the deck to Continueous, and let it fly for two songs pre-mixed. Kinda lame, I know, but it works in a pinch if you get stuck and forget to cue something up. Not that it ever happened to me... Roll Eyes Smiler

For something that is mainstream but edgey try:

"Clubber's Guide 2003" - Ministry of Sound

This is a two CD set that covers it. Just add some newer tracks inbetween and rock out.

I just wanted to correct everyone and say that most tracks you are all talking about are not techno, but they are actually called Trance.

My task here is done.

Well, yeah.

It just seems many times that when people refer to "techno" songs, it could be under any form, i.e. Drum and Bass, Trance.

Pop culture labels anything electronic as "techno"

In fact, trance is an offspring of techno, staight out of the German dance scene.

It seems to me that a lot of people have heard trance songs and labeled it as "techno." these people wouldn't like real "techno" as it can be very repetative at times. The term itself is used very broadly. As far as most people are concerned, trance is techno. Whatever.

A word from a tranced-out musician.

actually trance was invented right here in the states. And it does not derive off of techno. Trance was created with the 303 and they would be long repetitive songs. Over and over you'd hear the same subliminal synth roll, and it would put you in a trance. Hence the name. Trance today is what you can call as Epic Trance, or Uplifting Trance. Tunes that sound very happy, have 1 intro, 1 buildup, 1 break, 1 outro. It's disgusting. If they wanted to make djing any easier, all they would have to do is make all the songs have the same BPM, because a dj needs not to worry about building up or breaking down in a set anymore, nope, it's done for him... in every song.

Real Techno does have roots in germany, this music is a lot more minimal and involves a much more tech/industrial/robotic sound to it. This type of music is a lot darker than Trance, I personally like darker music.

Technically, you can argue either way. Think about it.

Tracing the roots of a musical style like this would be like tring to figure out exactly when man looked up at the night sky and asked "What's out there?" Different people will give you different answers.

Trance is a global thing, no doubt about that.

It seems that you've encountered more of a Euro-dance sort of trance. A large majority of it is not in fact repetative. PVD, Taucher, Barthezz, and Delerium show good examples.

My trance isn't something i see as "uplifting" music. Some is, but it's pulled of nicely and not strung out. It's only predictable in the sense that there are some basics in almost all dance music. Realize that an element, like another drum or something, is added every 16 to 32 beats. This may not always be the case, but you can definetly hear it at times.

Paul Van Dyk's "Never Forget" is a very laid back peice. The Geroge Acosta mix of "Relieve MY Pain" by DJ Elb is rather dark, as well as Red Sector's "Invasion over Berlin" and "Withces" by Aqualords.

The "Happy 2b Hardcore" series, that's very "uplifting" music. I've heard hardcore described as "hectic silly music" which in a way is true because the drums just fly along while synths crunch out some insane lines to a warped vocal track, definetly something that gets me moving, and i definetly can't dance. Roll Eyes

Anyway, that all for now, I'll leave you with my rantings.

I'm talking about the true beginning of trance in the 80s. Delerium is pretty new.

The hardcore you speak of is "Happy Hardcore"

And I should have specified, mainstream trance today is Epic Trance, or Uplifting Trance.

And if you trully want to hear dark, listen to my Progressive House Mix. This is dark music.
