I'll give you the techno/trance/house rundown. these are the three most commonly confused genres in electronic music, and for good reason. house trance and techno share many of the same qualities, 4 to the floor bassdrums, the emphasis on the upbeat high-hats, repeating patterns. in the case of trance the difference is usually in that it uses alot of synth sounds instead of samples , techno and house can use synths too but not as heavily as trance. some other key charecteristics of trance are the bass note on the upbeat , 16th note arpeggios, and overly long breakdowns that usually end with a 16th or 32nd note snare roll. techno on the other hand tends to be more repetative than house, often looping at the half measure point. techno usually has alot less melodic content, chord progressions in techno are rare. and house is the funky jazzy groovey stuff, lots of seventh chords, swing on the 16th notes, blatent unedited samples. umm... thats a pretty basic explanation but i don't wanna type a novel. dig? house = mood II swing . trance = paul okenfold . techno = ben sims .

If that's "Laymans" terms, I'm in the wrong industry?????

Simex you seem to have a grasp of the styles, can you give us some song examples by title and artist specifically examples that are more mainstream? Thanks

mainstream eh? umm... basement jaxx and deep dish are house (although deep dish can get kinda trancey at times). paul oakenfold, sasha & digweed, and BT are trance. and i don't think there are any mainstream techno guys... sometimes carl cox plays techno, sometimes laurent garnier plays techno, the most popular purely techno artist is probably jeff mills. oh and richie hawtin is a good example of techno.

I hate how you say Paul Oakenfold is just trance, it's too spooky to be plain trance. I believe we went over this before, and we came to the agreement that it was goa-trance or psychedelic trance...

paul oakenfold is the textbook example of trance. i swear to god. goa/psychadelic is stuff like hallucinogen , man with no name, kox box, laughing buddha, x-dream. but paul oakenfold has been known to play goa DJ set's , the music he produces is just straight forward trance. I'm not lying man.

I guess Prodigy would be Techno. They do like to cross genres though.

once again... "techno" is not a blanket term for all of electronic music. a blanket term for all of electronic music would be "electronic music". prodigy is not techno. techno is a VERY specific sub-genre of electronic music listen to my examples.

wait let me get this straight, listening and dancing to trance makes you a better dj???? that's as rediculous as saying eating wheaties makes you a better gold medal candidate!!
Trance is an artform of music definitely, but there's not one style of music that will make you a better dj, it's how much effort and practice you put in to your show.

whoa!!!! oxygen99 cool your jets man, i dont think tags meant anything personal against you. tags has been on this forum all most since day one and i for one respect the hell out of him and find him to be one of the most knowledgeable ppl on this forum. not to mention he is not just another kid on a computer who mixes beats for fun, tags is very experienced (after all they did make him a moderator). so please show a little respect to the "bigshots" here, nobody's offending you but don't give attitude to people as respected and experienced (and funny) as tags cuz tags is da man, ya hear?
