I know the item that you speak of, and trust me.....Alright, we aren't supposed to speak about or knock the competition in this forum but really, that item really sucks, badly. There is a reason it is being blown out everywhere. Anyway, if you want to get into digital scratching, you would be good to start with getting a pro scratch 2 and a qd-5 mixer to start with, then you could hook up a discman to provide the beats to scratch over. Beyond that I'm sure the other folks in this forum have something more useful to contribute.

Welcome!

Usually, the setup is 2 decks and a mixer in the middle. The mixer combines the sounds of the two decks.
However, if you are on a tight budget, you could get just one ProScratch 2 (PS2), a mixer, and a portable compact disc player just to play music/beats on. You could also get a less expensive mixer (not nocking the Q-D5, it's friggin' awesome) to save some money too. So, at the least, you would need one ProScratch 2 and a mixer, and your portable CD player.
But, for maximum creativity and fun, you would need two ProScratch 2's and a mixer.

This is what most rigs look like:

You would could just connect the output of the mixer to your home stereo, or just listen though headphones.

If it's possible, you may want to find a local dealer to check this stuff out in person. It makes a lot more sense when you see 'live'.

Check out the Turntable/Beatmixing section. There have been several posts on CD scratching.

Good luck!

You can hook whatever else you want up to the mixer, via any line level source or phono source. An mp3 player would work fine.

First and foremost, do you actually understand the concept of scratching, that is, do you know what the dj is doing? Do you know exactly what you want to do? You have to understand many things before you jump out and buy something. Big Grin

Like said the first thing you need to do is select a system. I would say go to the closest distrubutor of ADJ products and test some out. The system is key! You need to get a system that has the feel YOU want, thus you can work w/ it, and learn it, backwards and forwards. Peace.
