PDLEXPD, I've been in this business for over 17 years now and of all the Videos/DVDs I've seen, none of them have directly contibuted to my scratching abilities. No matter how step-by-step they are, nothing adds to your learning ability more than hands-on experience. Sure they might give you ideas on how to approach the techniques but that's about all, use them only as a guide. My advice is this...
1) Get your hands on a pair of good quality, well established branded equipment. The gear needs to be solid, accurate and reliable. A good turntable is a major contributor to your learning curve. Spend the extra money because it is worth it in the long run, trust me.
2) Practice and when your done practicing, practice some more. Practice until it hurts, then when you are in pain, practice until you puke. When you get out of hospital PRACTICE until you get committed. Whilst in the mental ward continue to practice until your brain oozes out of your nose and ears. After you've scooped it all up off your decks, continue to practice until you self-combust into flames. When the fire dies down a little enough for you to see....gues what...Practice some more.....get the idea?
3) No matter how bad it sounds, be persistent, you are not learning how to scratch, you are teaching yourself tactile feel and control between yourself the equipment and the sounds you are trying to manipulate. When you learn the control aspect and the feel, then you can progress to more advanced moves.
4) Watch other people doing it, either on video or in real life, absorb it, study the moves and imitate (don't copy) to the point where you can develop your own technique and style.
Remember people who are really good at scratching like Q-Bert and DJ Skilz all started in the same way as you, it's not rocket science or any special gift. You just need to have a passion for the art and dedicate a lot of your time towards it with tons of practice and persistence. Good luck.
