Just thought I'd let you guys know I'm now in a band as a DJ. We play mostly original stuff, ben folds type of piano rock. We have piano/vocals, bass/guitar, drums, and me. My setup includes my regular DJ setup (2 PS2's, Berhi DJX700) along with a newly acquired sp-202 sampler, and another Behri 1202FX to run effects. I also use a small guitar amp as a table top monitor. My role in the badn includes everything from playing drum tracks, alternating with our drummer, playing strings, guitar parts sampled on cds, and sampling piano, vocals, or guitar live and looping it. I'll try and get some setup pictures up soon, its quite impressive to see.

no recorded final tracks yet, but most often when we do practice we record using cubase and an alesis firewire16 mixer. I will definately post some when available.
As for pointers Insomaniac, we're just starting out, and I don't have a ton of experience to tell you about. Mostly, I'm sampling, doing some scratching, or playing with the +/- 100% pitch sliders, loading up effects onto vocals. Some songs I do very little, others its all centered around my sounds. Maybe soon we'll get one of those cheesy myspace pages or something.

We had our first show friday at our HS, with several other student bands. We played really well, except I couldn't hear myself at all. We played 7 songs, and I scratched, sampled, added effects, and soloed on my circuit bent keyboard. Here's some pics- I know the venve was our cafeteria, and the lighting sucked, sound was unprofessional, but you get the idea:

on May 25 the pianist in our band and I played a battle of the bands (that we got invited to paly at 24 hours in advance). It was a little nuts preparing for it, and the first 2 songs were rough as I was so discombobulated, but it ended up ok. didnt win but it was all about playing for me.

What I like about this sort of thing is that the DJ is being more of a musician rather than simply spinning discs.
No offense, but a well trained chimp can spin discs. That is a real no-brainer overall.
Granted, the DJ isn't exactly using anything ORIGINAL(well, 1 in 10,000, it's hard to find people to cut vinyl these days), but rather than just spin away, they are actually using stuff and bits as elements to something useful.
I saw this battle DJ clip on stupidity.com, which was linked from where-ever it came from. He was scratching the Darth Vader theme.
