I still need a lot of practice matching beats but I'm trying.
At the gigs I typically do there is a very mixed crowd so
I typically play sets by genre and it would be good to beat match
within each set. The question that springs to mind is -
what am I going to do when I'm getting to the end of a song
and don't have the beats matched up yet?
Go ahead and fade it over, knowing that it'll be a train wreck?
Punch a measure of song 2 in a couple times and then slam
it on over?

What techniques do you all use other than beat matching
that keeps the music going and can be done extempo****ously
at the end of a song?

Thanks
Ray

I too am new at this stuff but wat i did at the last gig wat cut down the base and treble on de first channel and turn it up on the 2nd one ... as to replace the beats on de channels or alternatively i scrached on de first track and quickly changed to track 2 .. or turn on flanger and then shift off to de next track!

Hope this helps!!

Cheers

YOU COULD SPEED UP or lower the pitch/speed to make the beat the same as the other or scratch it through to the next song.

just my 2cents worth Wink

When I need to go into totally different genre, different bpm's. I usually take a basic backbeat or loop from a like non-vocal backbeat, and punch it a few times, than leave the backbeat on for like 8 seconds, quickly put in the other cd, and mix it up. At least I try. lol.

good question raymour and one we have discussed in this section atleast twice... Use the search feature.

I used to slam the song right in or fade it real quick and also use certain effects. The crowd isn't usually that critical and wont really notice. Remember the more we practise the more we'll learn, so its OK to mess up

Once i slammed in Will I (ian van Dahl) into sandstorm caused they have the same distinct tune (yes that one!) at a certain point. This was a last ditch manuvear and it pulled off brilliantly.. noone knew it was a different song.... Roll Eyes

Well if the songs are really off, sometimes i like to suprise the crowd by speeding it up really fast and then setting the P.S.P on the PS2 to 3 and touch the platter and it dies, then start up another song. Or just do the good old fashion Backspin **Only do this sparingly, or it will get old** but if you do it at the right time, it drives the crowd wild !!

My trick of the trade for you to hear:

OK, I uploaded a little mix with the go to trick if your about to train wreck. I use two effects with my PS1's for this. Song on deck 1 about to end. Deck 2 cued to next song you are going to play.
(1). Enable the Skid Effect on deck 1.
(2). Set fader at midpoint.
(3). Enable the Echo Effect on deck 1 and if possible let play at least five seconds.
(4). hit pause on deck 1 and play on deck 2 simultaneously.

To here a sample MP3 Click H E R E

Please tell me what you guys think.

the one thing i would've done differently would be to extend that echo to make it a little more dramatic and sound a little more clear. Most music is in a 4/4 time signature which means there are 4 beats per measure, now lets say you echo and skid and then count to 4, on beat then press play on the other deck on your next 1. . . give it a shot.

It would be like this . . . . 1 2 3 4. 4. 4 .4 .4 1
the .4 representing the echo

Perfect. . . see how it's very clear that you are now in a new track, more dramatic, sounds great!

I see exactly what you are saying. I like it too. The ending of the track is more defined.

Thanks,

I dont like the pause so much. I would have done somthing like

1.2.3.4.4.4.4.4&1.2.3.4

In otherwards it sound fine. No ones listening to you mix and saying "ohh that was a horrible mix! i would of thrown it in 2 beat earlier". As a mobile dj i find myself forcing a song in sometimes. Espically when im ending a set and opening a new one.
