I am just wondering what can i do to get to be really well known in australia. i would love to be walking down the street and some people ask me for my autograph, but i just dont know where to start. i would love to release a cd and just be a dj everyone knows. how can i go about doing this?

Go into a bar, take of your pants and dance around on the pool table. . . if that doesn't work, talk to other dj's in your area.

...and producers, club owners, the guy at the record shop, etc. the more people you know, the more breaks you may get. play gig after gig after gig. the more people who see you will want to hire you for a better gig and so on and so forth.
i'm of the philosophy that a mix cd won't get you a gig, a residency or a record deal. it's about who you know and who has seen you live. but distribute mix cds if you want to... the bottom line is, a mix cd is no indication of what you will sound like live. btw, can i have your autograph? |

Small steps...it's not easy, there's no quick way of getting up there with the best and I'm no expert, but the advice I can give you is generic for all DJ's trying to make something for themselves.
Always give 110% no matter what DJing job you do. Be persistent, versatile, professional and approachable at all times. Get out there, getting involved with youth groups and community radio are always good places to start the exposure trip. Go to clubs, learn from other DJ's, see what they do and try improve on that. Hand out your card at every opportunity, don't be shy to shove a card in someones face especially club managers. Never slag off another DJ, word will travel and it may affect potential opportunites. Keep your ego in check at all times. Practice, practice, practice then when you're finished, practice even more until you throw up. You need to know your stuff backwards. Be open minded to new and old technology, know all types of PA and DJ equipment and know how to use it all..industry trade shows are good for that. When you've achieved all of the above you might find a few doors open for you. It's all about exposure and being good at it with your industry knowledge and DJ skill to back you up. Unfortunately this will take a hell of a lot of time and work, sure you can get somewhere by knowing someone and kissing a lot of ar$e but it's probably better to achive your own levels through hard work and dedication, you'll be more respected for doing it on your own. Good luck.... |
