I've had this happen before, and it happened recently. Have you ever had someone approach you towards the end of an event with money or a wallet in their hands and you're thinking "cool, a tip?" But it turns out they were just going to get a drink or just happen to have money in their hands.

So would I. We are professionals at a very nice payable job. Not someone a little underprivileged who needs some extra cash of tips like waiters etc.

Cheers

To kind of play devils advocate here. Tips are nice, but never expected or solicited. We charge enough for our service that we don't depend on tips. So if someone comes up with a wad of money at the end of the night I don't ever expect that it is for me. If I am offered a tip, I will tell the B&G (or other party host) that it is not necessary. If they insist I will graciously accept it. Remember that saying no once is polite, if they insist, declining them again may be constued as showing disrespect to the person offering the tip.

Tips are rather rare, I agree. And no, I don't feel insulted when someone offers me one. For those of us that own and run our own DJ service, yes we make plenty to where we don't need tips. But, if you work for a DJ company that charges a good chunch of change for a gig, and you only get $50 for doing all the work at the event, getting a tip is nice...been there, done that.

For the record, I don't expect, or require tips (like gratuity not included-in the contract) at all. I was just bringing up some conversation about an ironic situation where someone approaches you with money, but it's not for you Smiler .

I see tips as more of a compliment from the guests. Kinda like "hey nice job". Remember you get the big bucks from your employer!

I gotta give my 2 cents on tipping...
As far as being insulting, it depends on how big the tip is! Just got a $200 tip at my last wedding, I wasn't insulted a bit!! Big Grin On the other hand I've had people come up to me when I worked a club and give me a dollar and demand I play their song next! I just have to laugh at them. Especially if I just told them I can't play a song because the owner said I couldn't. I've had to explain... lets see, I can make a whole dollar and play your song and lose my job...or I can NOT play your song, miss out on that big dollar bill and keep making money week after week! hmmmm..what shall I do! The only insulting tip to me is a small one where the person expects you to bend over backward for them, as if a dollar is going to make your whole night. If you play a song someone requested and they come up and tip you a buck or two, I just say thanks, and put it in my pocket, it's just their way of showing their appreciation, most of the time they are not trying to insult you.
I'm a firm believer that tips should NEVER be required. If you REQUIRE more money, quote them higher when you quote them. If you require a tip for your employees, just pay them better to begin with. Ok that was more than 2 cents. Razzer
