We have never done a Rock n Bowl but figure it is about like most public events, a mixed crowd.
I would start with a little upbeat country or oldies. Test the waters later with something like some 80's rock.
In mixed groups I test to see what gets "most" of the crowd excited, go with what works and throw in a few sets of what the others want as the night progresses.
As the patrons drink tastes loosen also. Cool to see a 60 year old trucker dancing to EI Smiler
IMO oldies will fly with the majority bout all evening but again I live around Hicksville Ohio.
Be ready for anything and good luck!!
Some of the more seasoned DJs may have better ideas for you.

I have never done a rock'n bowl either, but have done many Looooooong nights of just music. Basically play radio. Play good songs of any variety. I would start with some well known classic rock and some newer mid-tempo country. All those songs that are "not quite fast enough to be a good energy dance song" are gonna be your best songs. You finally get a chance to use those songs that would normally never be used at a dance. Just ones with good beats and well known. Or if the crowd is younger i am sure you have the answer Just remember to make it flow well and it's pretty easy to play all types and varieties, just not songs that are older than the 70's

Anything goes at a rock n' bowl, just so long as it's popular. Really mix it up, go from country to alternative, to pop, to big band. Nuff said??? In other words just play ace's all night, no matter what gendre of music it is, most bowling alleys have wide variety of age groups, and musical tastes.

NEWB,
You can make a playlist to use as a guide, but at an event like that, don't stick to it to a T, unless every single song is working. The Dogg has some good advise, mix it up allott, and get a feel to what people like. They may not be dancing, but peoples faces, and if they are tapping their fingers or toes to certain tunes, or singing along. That's how you read the crowd, then stick a little more to what looks like it's making the majority happy. But still mix it up to make everyone happy.

Also go to mobilebeat.com, and check out their top 200, you could probably pretty much play every song on their, and have a great nite.

None at the moment, I am just trying to get an idea of what is played at differant events. I thought rockNbowls were straight top 40 rocks and hip hop but I guess not. Have you done any around here fobs? I wouldnt mind stayin away from it, if there is one you do regularly. I was hoping to get Olathe on Santa Fe. I have an "in" on that one, my dj partner is related to the guy who runs it. (crosses fingers and hopes you dont regularly do that one) from my understanding they kept firing DJ's because they sucked but a cousin also works there and says it wasnt the DJ that sucked but the fact that they were using the house system which sucked. The cousin was at the wedding we did and he LOVED our system and thinks they will also. The only thing I dont have is MUSIC! I dont want to buy **** I wont use so I try and make lists of whats playable.
Which reminds me of another post...

Talk to the bar manager at the Elks today while I ate lunch.
They have rock n bowl here a few times a year but it is only for the kids. 2-3 hours in the evening.
No smoking or drinking in the lane area, just the lounge during the party.
$15 for shoes, bowling and music for the alotted time.
There are adults keeping an eye on things during the event.
They do have a decent sound system at the alley, impressive lights and fog. I hooked some of it up a few years ago but I don't bowl so never really knew why it was needed.
Hip hop and top 40 is about what they play.

That's all part of DJing! Alot of your money at first, is spent on music. You can have the best sounding system and crazyiest light show, but it won't mean squat if you don't have the tunes.
For older stuff, you can pick up compilation CDs. Look for the "Pure" series (Pure Disco, Pure Funk), The "NOW" series, and Time Life Music. Just make sure when you pick them, they are by the "Original Artist", not some cheesey cover band. For the newest stuff, look into a DJ only service like TM Century or ERG Music.
