I've been in the DJ business for a rookie 3 years, maybe i've not payed that much attention, but I have gotten from 10-15 calls for weddings next year, in the past week or two. That's a lot for me because i for one, dislike weddings. But they are slowly starting to wear on me.
Is anyone else getting bombarded with calls, or is this just my busy time?

Yeah me too, I'm getting calls on Weddings for next year as well. I don't like them but I do like the money. That's my only incentive to do them. The money I make at weddings I put back into upgrading my gear for other types of jobs.

I found the best way to getting out of doing weddings is, when asked, is to over-charge, at least double or triple my regular rates. If they accept, good, even more money for me, if not, oh well the weekend becomes available for the jobs I prefer to do. I know its harsh, but it works for me and my situation.

I try not to do that, but i have done it before and gotten the gig, I just charges more than i would've, not double. But yeah it'll work out. Already booked 7 weddings for next year, this weekend alone.

We have been getting many calls for weddings as well. My wife and I and my other two partners like doing them.

There is some upfront work with weddings that doesn't happen with other events, but it is worth the time. I have solved some of the upfront work by using DJ Intelligence and let the bride and groom put in their details before we meet. I then look it over a day or so before the meeting to see where more information is needed. This makes the day of a very smooth event.

I have not done wedding's as of yet. But have had great fun with back yard gigs, and have a large New years Eve party {300 people} that is coming up. I am getting geared up to do that and hope to have as good a time there as I have at the local parties I do. As well I am in the market for new CD players and mixer do any of you have insider info on the equipment out, that's great with Anti-skip,CD Writes, and Quality. My budget has gone up{$1000.00} thanks to a couple of good jobs and would like to put it back into the gear for my business.
thank you for any input you have, The Bigguy.

Yah, same here. I've been getting at least 2 phone calls a day for weddings. This is normal (at least where I live). Think about this: This is their ONE special day....they are willing to pay pretty much ANYTHING. Go nuts! Make some coin, let them have their D.J. and everyone is happy.

So far, one call for a wedding for next year. I'm in the same boat as ROQ & Nexus. For me, this is a part-time thing, so I'd rather stick to events I like (Sweet 16s, school dances, block parties).

- bigguy, there are several good decks & mixers from ADJ. Do you want a dual deck, like the DCD-1000, or seperate decks like the CDI-500s? Check this link for more info: http://www.adjaudio.com/category.asp?category=CD_Players

Your best bet is to try out various decks for yourself. All we can offer is our jaded opinions. Big Grin

Good weddings are hard to come by, and with the one wedding that I have done, it truly was a delight to be there. If you're a people person and can deal with famliy issues: in-laws... you should be fine.

Weddings can be as gratifying as any other gig. If you are setting up the wedding gig yourself, just make it painfully clear from the word go that you take your marching orders from ONE designated liason. Then when all the uncles, cousins , brothers, mother in laws, etc. start bugging you, you send them to the liason, usually a sister , mother, or best friend of the bride. Let that person take the heat.

I have a relationship with a local wedding planner that has been profitable for me. I call them "assembly line weddings". This wedding planner owns her own wedding chapel AND reception room. She takes care of every detail of the wedding right down to the groom's tuxedo. The business is growing to the point that she is moving to a larger building that she has just purchased. I am going down there with a trailer and a van to help her move tomorrow.

When this wedding planner needs a DJ she calls me. Sometimes I get back to back gigs on Friday & Saturday and am able to leave the rig setup overnight in the same secure location. It took me several years to get my foot in the door at this place and convince them to give me a try. How it came to pass is a whole 'nother story. It has been very profitable for me for the last three years.
