Does anybody know where I can get Truss cover's that you can see in this gallery: http://www.jimmydee.com/#gallery
The idea is to cover the actual stands of the truss, looks kind of cool... Thanks!! |

I'm not sure where you can buy that kind of thing, but it appears to be something that can be made fairly easily with the right material though (and possibly save some money too).
You could make your own shapes and forms with a some parts from the local hardware store. Maybe check out somewhere that carries trade show type supplies; they might have something. Best, -Tech |

A casino I worked with doing big events had some similar items. Not exactly truss stand wraps, but similar none the less.
Best bet is to contact a company that makes trade show-type display items. Personally, I don't want anything covering my truss stands. I want to be able to have a clear view of it to ensure safey. I had some idiots cinchin my stand legs before a show. How the lighting ri stayed standing must just be a testament to me balancing the front and back load. I got to get a good yell at that guy because of that. Had I had covers like that, I would not have known. Ok, Here may be one solution.
Things you'll need: Spandex (White) PVC Pipe PVC Pipe Fittings Zip Ties I-Bolts Ok so for this explanation I am going to tell you how to make a square cover. First you need to make two squares out of the PVC Piping. Make one square bigger and another smaller one. The bigger one will be your base. Near each corner, screw on and I-bolt. Attach the smaller square around the top of your stand. Now when you go to set-up you take your spandex (which will probably have to be custom made to get the right shape) and zip tie it to the top square. On tour we have a custom made spandex screen with grommets attached to the corners and sides, so you can do this and use the grommets to tie the spandex to the I-bolts. Then do the same thing with the bottom square. You may need to use something to hold the bottom square down unless you want to attach it the the bottom of your stand. Now raise your stand. Stick an LED underneath and you have a nice stand cover/column of light! This is a very crude way to do it, but it would work. The possibilities are endless with this. If you have any questions I would be happy to elaborate more! Hope this helps! jthtiger The real name is Tyler Herron. I personally don't like hiding behind screen names. What I have to say is what I will take responsibility for. |

While the LED solution would be safe, I don't think the PVC would handle the rigors of the road. But I do agree using the LED solution as opposed to a traditional lighting fixture is the better way to go. But also, instead of using Zip ties, why not put eyelets in the spandex, surrounded by reinforcing backing?
Using Global Truss square or triangle trussing would also work and be durable, but I do not recommend this. Why? Well, it's the whole supporting elements that would visually distract from the lighting inside. Personally, if I was using that shiny trussing, I'd want to show it off. But then again, I'm an engineer and technician, so I'm not exactly "normal". I've seen similar things used fof some big shows, such as one I did with Leno a couple of years ago. Some sort of nylon over a very thin steel roundbar with minimal support but was designed specifically to do what you describe. Worked great, but in my opinion, not road worthy. But for a tour like that, it doesn't have a fixed set, just a concept design. The promoter can hire/rent it for the event locally and the handler/manager can just approve it. But I think the original question was wrapping a truss to cover the wiring and cabling and what-not. That I feel is not a safe idea. Better to design a stand-off system or drape to conceal it. A wrap for a truss to conceal wiring just isn't smart. You want to get that fabric away from those lights. So, if you're going to go with jthtiger's solution, I have the following words of advice: Measure twice, cut once and know how to sew! Be fire safe. you could use metal piping although it may be harder to manufacture.
Eyelets! that's the word i was looking for. I said grommets, but meant eyelets. I said zip ties because it would provide for an easy tear down. My idea wasn't perfect, you would need to do a little more designing to get it to work right. I just gave you a concept. Hope this helps! jthtiger The real name is Tyler Herron. Oh your concept is good, just needs some refining. But probably anyone with a sewing background will be able to come up with a really good concept.
I'm thinking more along the lines of like the Global Truss squarre trussing but with no "inner structure" and much thinner, say 1/2" or 3/4" hollow. Should be more than sufficient to handle the rigors of the road and be sufficiently light enough. Another concept is to aim tightly focussed lights from behind into a screen over a framed structure. The key would be to find a way to soften the light so it doesn't have a big "hotspot". The light projection would remove any issues regarding possible ignition, even if there was a hotspot.
