Hey guys I wanted to know if anyone can recommend a good portable mini disk recorder make/model that they use to record their mixes with particularly ones that can also accomodate a recording source from a digital output from their mixer (mine has one)?

Thanks in advance.

Try sony, they have a ton of options, and they did invent Mds in the first place. I have this model- MD-N505: http://www.hozt.com/items/sony_mz_n505_net_md_walkman_p...corder_gold_5ce1.htm

most of the Sonys do have optical digital input (including mine) so you can buy a 1/8" digital audio adapter to hook up to your mixer. highly recommended, they produce great quality sound, easily uploaded to a computer for streaming/MP3.

Look into one that does Hi-MD.

Hi-MD gives you minidiscs that hold up to 1 GB, can record uncompressed WAV files, and it can have the audio ripped at very high speeds.

Crazy stuff, Google it!

Here's a model for ya [Sharp MD-MS722]
Check out this link for info. Sharp MD-MS722 Mini Disk player/Recorder

This is the same model I use and the features are great as far as MD recorders go. They are hard to get because they come straight from Japan but they have all the features you are looking for and they record "studio quality" even in mono mode. Max recording time is 160 minutes on one disk and there is an external battery you can add. Oh heck, instead o being a salesman for Sharp go check it out for yourself. Hope this helps.

Roq why MD? You can get a hard disk based recording unit, or record right to your PC to burn to CD or copy into a MP3 player.

ROQ, check this one out:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack2496-main.html

I've seen it places for $399 with a 1GB card. It can record in WAV or MP3, and then transfer it right to your computer. It's not a bad little unit. Pretty simple to use, too.

There are also products that let you record right to an Mp3 player, like the iKey. There are also adaptors for older iPods that let you record audio to them.

Guys thanks for your input Im looking for a cheap AND portable solution. I don't want to record to MP3 because of loss of quality and then having to stuff around with conversions etc. The MicroTrack is probably the solution but it's too damn expensive, after conversion to AU dollars it will end up being over $800+. I don't even think you can get them in Australia yet. So as it stands MD (with Hi-MD)offers an equal solution at 1/8th the cost. I'm keeping an eye on the market and appreciate your input and any further suggestions. Thanks.

Well, that still leaves the iKey/iKey Plus.
quote:
Records audio to uncompressed WAV format or
MP3 format (w/ selectable bit rate, up to 256kbps)
You can hook up an iPod, a USB hard drive, or a USB flash drive, and record right to it.

It's a cheaper alternative to MD.

Thanks Insomaniac, am I reading it correctly, the iKey doesn't have a Digital Input for recording, only one Analogue input. Confused

Yeah, looks like it. How do you plan to record things? Just out the mains (the REC out) or something different.

My mixer has a Digital Out as well as the regular analogue outputs. I wanted to take advantage of the Digital Out and record in pure Digital.

FYI Mixer is not AA brand. I won't mention manufacturer in leiu of being flamed, the model though is known as a DJM-800. I think you can work the rest out. Wink Peace.

Roq,
You wouldn't get flamed. That is a very nice mixer.
