I'd like to know if I can buy pre recorded CD's with a mix of the best of the 40's-50's-60's-70's-80's-90's-2000, along with a few novelty songs and some background music, along with a binder that list the hits by song title and artist and then the cd and song #, and beats per minute, type of music...more or less. Maybe 50-100 cd's should cover this...

You know the hits that would be used at a wedding, party...for dancing...

Are these available, if so, where and how much should I expect to pay for them?

I read on a site that it is legal to copy a bunch of songs on a single disk for private use but if you use them as a dj, you could be sued...

Is this true and do you know of any small time dj's that have been sued by the record people?

How risky is this to buy a set and use them on a small scale dj business?

10/3 update:

I did a search for ERG and it came up on planetdj.com's website but the music appears to be the popular stuff from 2001 to the present.

and promoonly.com site...

re: the promoonly.com site, it gives a list of the songs, followed by the artist name, then it looks like a time to start? and and ending time, then the type of ending, cut or fade and beats per minutes?

what does the beginning time thing mean? is that where a dj is suppose to start the music?

I am looking for a wide variety of music that covers the best of the 50's-60's-70's-80's-90's-2000 music along with a binder that list the hits by song title and artist and then the cd and song #.

Can anyone list a website of know of anyone who would sell me such a grouping?

Is this type of request available and how much would I expect to pay?

you can leave messages here or email me at ffelker@hotmail.com if it's confidential.

It is not illegal to make your own compilation disc if you own the original tracks for DJing.

there is no risk in buyin music, you can't get sued if you play music that you bought, check some services like promo only or ERG

They beginning time thing is how long before the vocals come in. Radio DJ's use this when they're talking over the beginning of a song to introduce it or do other announcements. This way they know when you shut their big yaps so they are not talking over the vocals. Big Grin

Hey guys, Victor from Promo Only here. Let me see if I can answer some questions.

Ned, There is NO, NONE, ZILCH legal collectoion like you describe on the market in the USA at this moment. I would recommend the Time Life series or billboard CD's. If anybody trys to sell you something else remember it's illegal.

Now for using your backup CD's for DJing, technically it is illegal also. You are correct withthe personal backups you can make but that is exactly what they are PERSONAL. Public performance is a different monster. Of course this is also a very grey area and some people will tell you otherwise but we are going by the DMCA which at the moment is the standard.

I won't answer the question after that one because well you are taking your own chances. I will just say they are ilegal.

What companies like Promo Only does is NEW promotional music. You subscribe to us and we send you the latest stuff.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
Victor Alicea

Everyone,
Victor is one of the head guys at Promo Only and a really great guy. I sent him this thread because he knows the RIGHT answers to those questions and I want OUR Members to get the right 411. We are very fortunate to have him check in here with us, and hopefully he will be back, BUT I know how busy he is.
Victor,
Thanks for the 411, and see you at LDI.

Do some research -> Illegal Use of Compilation CDs

quote:
In the "Home Recording Act" (which is now Public Law) a non-commercial entity may copy his/her original recording onto another format without obtaining copyright permission so long as that copy is being utilized solely for their own personal pleasure. The "Home Recording Act" is NOT applicable to commercial ventures (including mobile and club DJ applications). Therefore, no matter how you try to interpret this, it is illegal for you to transfer music to CD-R or mini-disc to lighten your load, track your reception selections, even though you already own the original.

You'd be amazed at how many people break this law as DJs.

As far as the main topic...Get out to Time Life and get ALL their yearly CDs. I've got every CD of theirs from '54 - '89. It is rare that I do a party which I don't have a requested popular song.

well, like it says: if you do it for your own personal pleasure, it's okay. but not if you are a commercial entity and charge a fee for your services (ie. mobile or club dj).

Ned,
Here's what we do. In addition to the normal process of buying of CD's, we look for compilations such as "The best of ?????", either by genre or by artist. The advice concerning Time-Life is priceless. We place our CD's in notebooks with sleeves. Using Excel or a database program, we keep track of our inventory as well as having the ability to sort by artist, song title, etc. If you don't have a laptop, you can print the lists out. Now, we use have a 4-channel mixer. We have two Pro-DJ1's attached as well as an MP3/CD player as a backup. We record as many songs as possible on the MP3 player. We use that as an "emergency backup" device. Now, as far as music goes... in our case, We enjoy hearing not only 'original' cuts but remixes as well. We use KaZaa to download and "review" the songs that we might have an interest in. We then make a list of the preferred cuts, then go out and purchase them, in one form or another. By the way, pawn shops and some music centres have a used CD department. You can find some very good deals. Anyway, the advice here on this forum is great. Above all, remember that you are a business and you accumulate inventory. Follow the guidelines as stated by your state revenue department, etc.

Huh , Roll Eyes "I just wanna cookie"? Oh boy you guys are just way over thinking this I got morals stuff way to much. {did you know it is ILLEGAL to spit on the sidewalk in 49 states, maybe we should hold it?} Alaska the last great frontier they laugh at that law. "there's caution to the wind for ya"? "Bottom line is, does every one who want there song played have to get there permission?" Or better yet afford the cost of head liners to play there dance. you know as I do E.S.P is something we all do not have, when a request is made and you forgot to think two weeks prior to buy that song at your local music store, you provide. Wink
Simple. thanks for the rant?
