Ok, I got booked for a birthday party in which they want a 70's theme. They told everyone to dress as charactures from the AUSTIN POWERS movies. I'm in the process of picking up those discs since I don't have them already. They also want to have a hula-hoop compitition, as well as a twister game sometime in the night. Any idea's as to what music I could use for them??? Also any other music that might be along the same lines as Austin Powers. Ive got till Oct. 8th to get this all ready. I think I'm gonna rent some other psychedelic lighting effects to go with what I already have, ei. ADJ GROOVE WHEEL, I think it's called, the one with the oil gel, and possibly the Aquarius.

hey, i've done "twister competitions" before...i think it sounds cool with just instrumental music playin(i.e. no words) so if you could find some 70's backbeats or some disco beats and loop em together...that would probably be sweet

The Austin Powers soundtracks are cool, but I like the Pure Funk, Pure Disco 1,2,&3 better.
For Twister, (following Borris' idea) Average White Band "Pick Up the Pieces" springs to mind...don't know why, seems like a good fit. Hula-Hoop, maybe some Hawaiian music? A little Elvis, maybe (Hound Dog, All Shook Up)? Or "Swing the Mood"? Something they could hula to the beat. |

For Twister......Play Little Willie. Cause you can't push Willie where Willie won't go.....lol
And for a 70's party, you must bring a mirror ball. I don't know how much they are paying, but maybe charge them a little more and suggest a lighted dance floor (ie. sat night fever style). You may be able to rent one. Also if you have a projector and screen available, you could upsell a 70's movie theme. You can play Car Wash, Sat Night Fever, Grease and other 70's classics in the background. Ooohh almost forgot, get an afro wig, and go to the salvation army and get some Bell Bottoms. |

Thanks for the input guys. Already got the mirror ball and other lighting needed. Bell Bottoms, yeah gotta go get some of them. Stripped Bell Bottoms, and a plaid shirt. Thanks for the song suggestions, will definately check some of them out.
As far as the AUSTIN POWERS soundtracks I've got, I'll probably just be playing some stuff off of those when people are arriving. Love that Madonna song. I've been going through my old vinyl L.P. collection since I bought quite a bit of music back in those days. Memory Lane,ah yes,,, love going there every now and then. |

Dogg;
For the Hula Hoop contest I used the song Wipeout. It goes over really well. think it would be appropriate for the party. Let Us know what you decide to play. J@CK@$$ |

Yeah, wipeout works for me. I just bought a DJ companion book with helpful hints on all types of dances and stuff, and that song was listed for such a thing as was Tequila, Rockin' Robin, and the Hawaii 5-0 theme song.

Well, I didn't really get a chance to see how the hula-hoop, and twister games would turn out as this party was a bomb from the word go. I started playing at 8 pm to a room of only 15 people. By the time the birthday boy showed up there were maybe 18 people. In total there ended up being only 30 people show up for this gig. Pretty sad. I took my entire lighting system which took me close to 2 hours to set up along with the PA. If I woulda know how it was gonna turn out I wouldn't have brought any lighting at all, mind you the people that were there got thoroughly wowed, especially when I ended the night off with my own remixed version of Zeppelins Whole Lotta Love, and had every light I brought going all at the same time. I kept the lighting pretty tame all night since no-one there seemed to want to dance to anything until at least midnight, when they all started really partying. I made sure that I got payed first before the hall, and bartender did which was a good idea since they were short of cash at the end. I think they had a poor turnout because they actually charged $10 a head admission, and this was a surprise birthday party. You don't charge for something like that, you just absorb the costs and have a good time. I've done scads of birthdays, and that's the first time I ever seen an admission charged. They all seemed to have a great time though regardless of the number of guests which by the way half of them were family members. They seemed like a nice bunch of people, it's just too bad it didn't go the way they wanted. They spent all sorts of money on decorations, costumes, prize giveaways and food, but no- one there to enjoy it all. Oh well, I guess. Bottom line, I still get payed.

At least you got paid.
A (not-so-close) friend of mine threw a 4th of July party and charged $10 a head ($25 for a family). It was in his backyard, not even at a hall or anything. And he wanted the money in advance!! Needless to say, we looked at the invite, laughed, and tossed it. You can't charge your friends (and family!) to come to a party at your house. You can ask them to bring beverages or food, but never ask for money. Like DOGG said, it's all part of throwing a party. |

Yeah, the gig I'm doing next weekend is a fund raiser for a young boy that died of some medical problems. They are naming part of a playground and park after him. The event is going to be covered by local TV station and Newspaper. This one will be quite a big bash from what I hear. They want ONLY 50's and 60' music for it, nothing else. That should make my life easy for the night. I'm hoping that I might get some free advertising out of this one. I'll let ya know how this one turns out.
