I use it for back up of my back up for mobile recording. In my rack, I have a DVD-Recorder, a CD-R and cassette deck(can do 2 things at once, or chained together), and a MiniDisc player/recorder.

Personally, I like the extended range of the DVD and the length of time in stereo, so it makes an ideal first choice, but I do have to bring my video camera to drive it since it is expecting a video signal. I also use the CD-R for the most part, especially when doing various audio transfers.

MiniDisc, while a great format, is not my favorite, mainly since I can usually hear the loss of the ATRAC compression, which is still a thousand times better than any MP3. And my system is so high resolution, any flaws are revealed in this, even in a live sound environment. Yes, live sound, not a DJ, as I'm not a DJ.

With CD-R so cheap, why bother with MiniDisc? Just seems to be a format to have if you have an appliation for it only, and playback wouldn't be my main choice

It is a good, robust format, I will give it that. Different than the failed DCC, but still, of those two, MIniDisc was my choice. I hate non-linear digital formats.

Well let me see...with a MD I can add delete at will whats on it, can move tracks to where I want, COMPACT can fit 7-9 in my shirt pocket, which can hold about 8 hours of music, I don't think you can do that with DVD's...but as you said your not a DJ so we each use MD's for certain things. I find them GREAT you don't..The human ear is only "good" for about 10,000 hrtz, I think most people at a party couldn't tell the difference between 10,000 and 8,000 hrtz just my opinion..

True, you can rename and re-order on a Minidisc. Yes, add and delete at will.

But most people can hear above 14,000 cycles and I can still get to 17,000

But, a CD is cheaper(like 3 cents a disc for one-offs) and can hold really, just as much without ATRAC compression, which, doesn't just throw away high and low information. It uses a highly sophisticated algorithm based on psychoacoustics that calculates what can and can't be heard.

Heck, put all your files on your hard drive as 16-bit 44.1K WAV files, then burn your CD's for your event. Higher resolution.

Once CD-R became affordable for the "common man", I moved from MiniDisc and DAT to CD-R for my personal recordings and on-site work. It DOES make a difference.

The main argument I can agree with is your re-organize your discs. Seems reasonable. But I can do the same thing with my source files in minutes(and have it burned to RedBook Audio) to CD-R. PLUS: I can do custom print-on labels. But, since we're shooting it out: CD's rarely use the CD Text extensions and most decks don't support this either. Labelling electronically is still the weak point either way. MiniDisc does this as a standard(with a maxmimum character limit). Either way, once the disc goes in the machine, unless you have your list, you're kinda at it's mercy.
