When you are the guest at a party with a DJ, do you get up and dance? Assuming the DJ is half-way decent. Or do you just sit and critique the whole night?

As long as they are doing a decent job, I'll get up and dance, especially if not alot of other people are dancing. Cause I know how it feels to play to an empty floor...

I gotta get down, as long as the songs and the mix are correct. I try and stay away from the DJ booth and let the DJ do their thing. But there are times where I looks at the guy and want to ask, "How does this song fit into the mix?" You can't forget the semi-biased friends that say, "You are better than that guy", feeding your ego.

I gots to get my groove on. Of course here and there, I'll throw in a little, "AH MAN THAT GUY IS INSANE!" or a "Meh, that was okay." But yah know the music just gets to me.

I usually always dance (not well mind you). The one thing I know from my 14 years in this business is that nobody ever wants to be the first to the dance floor. So I am usually always the first one out with my wife to try and help motivate things. Sometimes if the DJ is not that great we get up and "pity" dance to try and help out.

I have been in Musical Theatre all of my life so I have been naturally comfortable in frront of a lot of people...however I never liked dancing very much. I go to a private Jewish school so there are always tons of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Unntil about a year or 2 ago and since became a DJ, i am, much more comfortable dancing at parties. I don't really care what people think of me...I am there to have fun. So yeah i dance and have a great time.

Its funny this was brought up now because this fits in perfect to a prom I was at last weekend. It was a pro compnay doing the prom that has been around for a while but they sent out their least experianced guys that nite. Ive only seen them once at a wedding before seeing they operate very far from me but they were much better then. So ya I critiqued them for a while then relized I know from when I started that empty dance floors just kill your mood so I got my table up and I think it gave the support they needed. They did alright the rest of the night after more people got out and they got the feel of the crowd and all those request we gave them Razzer

I am one dancing fool!
In fact, I went to this bar Monday night, where there was a guy doing Karaoke and DJing as well.. we walked in, and everyone in the bar, all 10 people, was dancing.. his music selection wasn't the best.. but as long as people have a good time it's cool. I too will sit and say.. ahh man not that song or something.. this guy was Mic shy, I could tell as he only talked once, and when he did talk, he spoke way to fast and mumbled, signs of being nervious. Like the others said, I am out to have a good time, and I try and make the best out of it.

STay away from the DJ!!!....
I just dance and consider myself as any other person coming to have a good time. Imagine someone coming and dissing you while u r mixing! After the dj finishes, i have a nice chat with him and show him a few tips on mixing better. This way i don't dis-respect a fellow dj and help him out too. Smiler

I guess if the DJ was ruining the vibe, I would go and and try to steer him/her out of the weeds.

If I was having trouble getting the floor boiling, I would welcome someone giving me some hints about what the crowd might be into.

And yeah, I get up and cut the rug.

Not to be egotistical, but I wouldn't appreciate someone coming up to me and telling me I'm DJing wrong! Eeker Everybody's got an opinion, and some peoples are worth less than others. Don't welcome advice from someone who just comes up to your booth and tells you your doing it wrong, chances are they've never DJed a day (or night) in their life. Most professional DJ's would have the respect not to stick thier 2 cents in on someone elses gig. Most of the time, the more someone brags about themselves, the less talent they have.

Oh and as far as the original quesion...
Can't help but critique a little or appreciate, depending on the circumstances. And Dancing...depends on how good the music is and how much I've had to drink! Big Grin

I Agree opinions are like.... well you know everyone has one, and we know what they spew out. But, then again isn't that why many of us come to these boards? For other DJ's opinions. Wink

True, we all offer up opinions here. But right now, on the board, you aren't in the middle of a set. And, it's a little more communal (?) here. We're all friends, right? Wink

I would not go up to the booth either. Maybe send the wifey to request a song or two (girls always have better luck with requests). Maybe chat with them at the end of the night. Give them a 'good job', that sort of thing.
I would not offer advice, tips, etc. "Ya know, I'm a DJ too...Here's what I would have played." Nothing is more aggrivating then being told how to do your job by a complete stranger. And I'm not just talking about DJ'ing, either. It goes for most professions. For example, I'm a 'computer guy' by day. I can't stand getting on-site to fix a problem, and the user starts in with, "My brother-in-law is a computer guy , he said you should check the refragulation file on the C drive..." Ughhh...
