I think it can be an added advantage to take credit cards as a mobile dj. It's just a matter of rates and total fees for such a service.

I've been taking cards now for a couple of months and found clients, especially for private parties, like the ability to pay right at the event. Check out this site for more info on setting yourself up for this.

taking credit cards is very expensive it costs hundreds or even thousands I was told yearly cost. That site you gave me does it work for Candian residents too? I usually take cheques. It's easier and doesn't cost extra money and alot of people have cheqing account.

I don't take credit cards. With my main client base, there is too much credit card fraud going around, plus they'll contest just about anything.

My typical clients pay either via check or cash at the end of the event(cash is checked for counterfeiting on the spot, there was a problem with bogus bills in my region a few months back). I prefer check.

If I went credit card, I get to deal with a 2.5% of my payment going to the CC company, plus 20-cents per transaction, plus needing to carry the equipment to do the transaction or documenting everything. In the chaos of a big event, something can easily get overlooked. Let's not forget the $80 or more it can(but doesn't always) cost to have that merchant account gear and the merchant account fees.

For my big clients, check is my preference. For my wedding and party type clients, they typically prefer to pay in cash, mainly since they end up receiving a lot of cash at their event(gifts in the form of cash). A few pay by check.

It is in my contract that I am to be paid in full before the end of the evening. Typically, that's rarely a problem. My last gig, they took 2 weeks to pay. The other two were even less of a problem. One paided the next day. One was totally hosed: Chinese wedding, very traditional Chinese family on the Bride's side. They took all the money gifts(the parents) and split, leaving the newlywed couple with a $15K+ restaurant bill and no money to pay me, the videographer and the photographer. I still got paid the next day without complaint. Poor couple, that wasn't a nice thing to happen to them.

CC's can be convenient, but sometimes more hassle than they are worth.
