once you make the transition from hand spinning CD's to using a computer to store and play your music, would you ever go back to spinning CD's on a deck and why/why not?

Is it possible to download music without having to buy it, and if you do download it for free, how do the CD police know how you obtained it?

please ad as much as you'd like to this topic.

I prefer a deck any day. I can't mix on a computer. There's just something about having the fader in my hand that makes it better. Maybe if I used a MP3 controller, but still, I prefer the "old-fashioned" way.

personally i'm a cd guy, I've been a cd guy since 92, and that's just me, I don't believe that I would be able to comprehend mixing on a laptop, add to that the fact that I don't trust windows. . . I don't have anything against those that do, but it's just not my cup of tea. If that's the road you wish to travel, buckle your seatbelt and drive safely.

Personally, I use both at every show. I have a Penium Laptop running Windows XP and it has never had a single problem for me. Still, I wouldn't trust having just a computer. I know people that do and I think its foolish to have only one source unit with you. I do prefer my Laptop over the CD player usually. With the laptop i could basicly load a whole nights worth of music and walk away ( i don't ) but its possible. I usually play bars and know alot of the people that are there, so I can talk for a bit without having to leave every couple minutes to switch cd's. And when people come up and ask for a request, they usually want it next, well i can get any one of my 10000 songs up and cue'd in about 5 seconds.
spinning cd's does make the time go buy faster though, which is really nice for those less than exciting events.

WHAT!?!??!?

HAHA, not quite, mp3 is a compressed audio file, meaning it removes frequencies that are generally not heard by common computer speakers, If you are going to rip your CDs to mp3s, do them at 256kbit/sec or, minimum 192kbit/sec....but mp3s do NOT sound better...if anything worse, but if done right, they can sound the same

BTW this wasnt a "bash post" just a correction of a misconception i see alot of ppl have Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Oh, and dont download MP3s illegally for one, they are generally formatted to cut out low bass freqs that are essential when playing songs through a big PA system (but not with comptuer speakers) and by cutting these really low and really high freqs, it achieves a smaller file (usually anywhere from 1-5 meg) if mp3s werent compressed (aka .wav files) most would be from 40-200 meg...so you can see how much is cut out

and secondly, downloading mp3s, as mentioned before, just isnt right...sure i do it every once in a while if i cant wait to get a song, but almost alwyas, I download it when i plan to buy the cd in the near future...so its kinda temporarily "on loan" i guess you would say

In the history of crime, only one person has been encriminated for piration of software/music and he was running a full fledged business duplication software and music...he wasnt quite the smartest song in the album. So no, chances are 99.9999999999999991 (yes the 1 at the end is essential) that you wont get caught, but just dont do it...its just not right... Smiler
