When programming scenes for say, a rock show, would you more often create scenes manually, or would you often use the effects generator for X/Y
movement?
Thanks,
Ed

How about the cop-out answer:

It depends.

Honestly, it really does. You may need to do both. Use some static scenes, and some FX scenes. Some may need manual things done, some may not. It's all dependent on what you're trying to accomplish at anyt given point in time.

OK, for my events, I have a "Lobo" scene, which is constantly evolving as I learn lighting better. It starts with a 2-second fade from whatever to Blue for my 64 LED Pros, while my two movers shoot ACROSS stage and up onto the walls. Then the shutters open in the next step and then you see the twirling vortex effect(slightly different spin speeds, but that's OK).

The rest of my scenes are more or less just washes, nothing fancy.

As always, it's "what is needed to get the job done is what should be done". I'm all for lazy, if you can do it via the FX Generator, then do it. You can always augment it later. If using the FX Generator isn't going to do it for you, then skip it and manually program it.

If you intend to mix and match fixtures, you may wish to do some FX Generating to get values for the various lighting units, then document and manually make a new scene with multiple steps to get the job done.

There is no single right way to get it done. If it works, then it's right. If it doesn't work, then it's wrong. Kind of takes the pressure off you now, doesn't it? There are some ways that may end up being better than others, but we'll all learn what works best for ourselves and how we work as we continue to use MyDMX.

Thanks again guys,
The scenario is basically this. I will be doing lights in 2 weeks for a band that plays rock-reggae-funk type stuff. They are very good actually, anyway, I would just like to create scenes with a cool look, not to much crazy movement, focus lights on certain positions for solos, lead singer, drummer etc,. I have 8 LED cans, 4 G-Lites 300s, 4 Deliya X3 16 channel moving fixtures, 4 color merge CMY changers, and 4 dimmer channels for spots. I want to keep the lights out of the musicians eyes, so seems like it would be a good idea to manually create movement, or use the generator, then edit the X/Y movement on the steps to keep the movement above eye level most the time.

Forgot to mention,
the moving lights will be on the floor as there is nothing to rig to at this venue, that is why I want to keep the lights out of the eyes.
